15 Things to Do in St. John Beyond the Beach

Hiking trail in Virgin Islands National Park, St. John

Yes, the beaches are incredible. But St. John has so much more to offer. Two-thirds of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, which means hiking trails through tropical forest, historic sugar plantation ruins, and some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean. Here are 15 things to do when you want a break from the sand.

Hiking and Nature

1. Hike the Reef Bay Trail

This 2.2-mile trail descends through tropical forest to a pristine bay. Along the way, you'll pass ancient Taino petroglyphs carved into the rocks. The trail ends at Reef Bay where you can cool off with a swim. Allow 3-4 hours round trip. The trail is moderately strenuous with elevation change. Bring water and start early to beat the heat.

2. Walk the Cinnamon Bay Nature Loop

A shorter, easier trail (0.8 miles) that loops through the ruins of a historic sugar factory and along the Cinnamon Bay shoreline. Great for families and bird watchers. Look for bananaquits and hummingbirds in the flowering trees.

3. Hike to Ram Head Point

Starting from Saltpond Bay on the south shore, this 1-mile trail climbs to a dramatic rocky promontory with 360-degree ocean views. Go at sunrise or sunset for the best light. The trail is exposed, so bring water and sun protection.

4. Explore the Annaberg Sugar Plantation Ruins

One of the best-preserved sugar plantations in the Caribbean. The ruins include a windmill tower, factory building, and slave quarters. Signs explain the history of sugar production on St. John. The views from the ruins over the bay are stunning. Free to explore, open daily.

Snorkeling and Water Activities

5. Snorkel the Underwater Trail at Trunk Bay

The marked snorkeling trail at Trunk Bay is unique in the Caribbean. Plaques underwater identify coral species and fish. The trail takes about 30 minutes to complete. Best in the morning before cruise ship visitors arrive.

6. Kayak from Cruz Bay to Honeymoon Beach

Rent a kayak in Cruz Bay and paddle to Honeymoon Beach. The paddle takes about 30 minutes each way. You'll pass rocky coves and may spot sea turtles along the way. Land at Honeymoon Beach for a swim before paddling back.

7. Take a Sailing Charter

Several operators in Cruz Bay offer half and full-day sailing charters. You'll visit snorkeling spots only accessible by boat, enjoy a picnic lunch on deck, and sail past the south shore cliffs. A highlight of any St. John trip.

8. Night Snorkel

Book a guided night snorkel to see a completely different underwater world. Octopus, squid, and lobsters come out at night. Several operators in Cruz Bay offer this. Bring an underwater light or rent one on site.

Culture and Community

9. Visit the St. John Arts Festival

Held periodically in Cruz Bay, the arts festival showcases local artists, musicians, and food vendors. Check the schedule during your visit. It's a great way to meet locals and find unique souvenirs.

10. Shop at the Cruz Bay Farmers Market

Open Saturday mornings in Cruz Bay. Local farmers sell tropical fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and crafts. Try fresh soursop, passion fruit, and coconut bread. Arrive early for the best selection.

11. Tour the Catherineberg Ruins

These hillside ruins offer a glimpse into St. John's sugar industry past. The windmill tower is one of the best preserved on the island. The drive up Centerline Road offers spectacular views. Combine with a stop at the Bordeaux Mountain overlook.

Food and Drink

12. Eat at a Local Food Truck

St. John has a thriving food truck scene. Try the fish tacos at Fish Munchies, the roti at Herc's, or the barbecue at Sing Leong. These are some of the best meals on the island and a fraction of restaurant prices.

13. Visit Coral Bay

The sleepy village of Coral Bay on the east end has a completely different vibe from Cruz Bay. No ferry dock, no cruise ship passengers. Just local bars, a few restaurants, and spectacular views. Don't miss Skinny Legs for burgers and sunset views.

Sunset and Relaxation

14. Watch Sunset from Cruz Bay Overlook

Drive or hike to the Cruz Bay overlook on Centerline Road for the best sunset view on the island. The sun drops behind St. Thomas and the Caribbean lights up gold and pink. Bring a blanket and a bottle of wine.

15. Stargaze from Your Villa Deck

St. John has minimal light pollution, making it incredible for stargazing. Lay back on your villa deck and watch the Milky Way appear. The best viewing is during the new moon. No equipment needed, just clear eyes and patience.

Local tip: Most of these activities are free or low cost. The Virgin Islands National Park visitor center in Cruz Bay has maps, trail guides, and current conditions. Stop there on your first day.
