Best Time to Visit St. John: Month-by-Month Guide
St. John is beautiful year round. The temperature rarely drops below 75 or above 90 degrees. But there are definite sweet spots when the weather is perfect, the crowds are thin, and the prices are right. Here's our month-by-month breakdown from 40 years of living and hosting guests on this island.
Quick Summary
| Season | Months | Temp | Crowds | Prices | Best For |

| Shoulder | May - Jun | 80-88°F | Low | Medium | Best value |

| Shoulder | Nov | 78-85°F | Medium | Medium | Pre-season deals |
December through April: Peak Season
This is when everyone from the mainland wants to escape the cold. The weather is absolutely perfect. Low humidity, gentle trade winds, and almost no rain. This is the most expensive time to visit and villas book up months in advance.
- December: Festive atmosphere, holiday decorations in Cruz Bay. Book villas 3-6 months ahead.
- January: Best weather of the year. Cool evenings, sunny days. Peak pricing.
- February: Perfect for escaping mainland winter. Carnival season begins on St. Thomas.
- March: Spring break brings more families. Still great weather.
- April: Easter week is busy. Weather starts warming slightly. End of peak pricing.
Local tip: If you want peak season weather without peak season prices, book the first two weeks of December or the last two weeks of April. You'll get nearly identical weather at lower rates.
May through June: Shoulder Season (Our Pick)
This is the best time to visit St. John. The weather is still excellent, the water is warming up, and the crowds have thinned out. Villa rates drop 20-30% from peak season. You'll have beaches almost to yourself on weekdays.
- May: Our favorite month. Warm but not hot. Calm seas. Great snorkeling visibility. Low crowds.
- June: Getting warmer but still comfortable. Trade winds keep it pleasant. Good villa availability.
Local tip: May is the sweet spot. You get 90% of the peak season experience at 70% of the price. If you have flexibility, this is when to come.
July through October: Low Season
This is hurricane season and the hottest time of year. But don't let that scare you off. St. John is south of the main hurricane belt and direct hits are rare. The beaches are empty, villa rates are at their lowest, and the local vibe is at its most authentic.
- July: Hot and humid. Afternoon showers are common but brief. Great for budget travelers.
- August: The quietest month on the island. Many restaurants close for vacation. Best rates of the year.
- September: Peak hurricane month. Check travel insurance. Incredible deals if you're flexible.
- October: Starting to cool down. Some restaurants reopen. Still very quiet and affordable.
Local tip: If you visit during hurricane season, buy travel insurance that covers hurricane disruptions. Most trips are unaffected, but it's worth the peace of mind.
November: Shoulder Season Returns
November is a hidden gem. The weather is transitioning back to peak season conditions. Restaurants and shops are reopening. The water is still warm from summer. And you'll pay shoulder season rates for near-peak conditions.
Local tip: Thanksgiving week is a mini-peak. Book around it, not during it, for the best deals.
What About Hurricane Season?
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with the highest risk in September and October. But St. John has been fortunate. Major hurricanes are rare, and the island has robust recovery infrastructure. If you book during this season:
- Buy travel insurance with hurricane coverage
- Book villas with flexible cancellation policies (we offer these)
- Monitor weather forecasts starting a week before your trip
- Have a backup plan for indoor activities (reading, cooking, napping in your villa)
Water Temperature by Season
| Month | Water Temp | Visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Jan - Mar | 78-80°F | Excellent |
| Apr - Jun | 80-83°F | Excellent |
| Jul - Sep | 83-86°F | Good (plankton blooms can reduce visibility) |
| Oct - Dec | 82-80°F | Very Good |
Our Recommendation
If you want the absolute best experience: Book May or early June. Perfect weather, warm water, low crowds, and shoulder season pricing. If you want peak season perfection: Book January or February but reserve 3-6 months ahead. If you want the best deal: Book late July or early December.
