The 7 Best Beaches in St. John, USVI
St. John is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the Caribbean, if not the world. With two-thirds of the island protected as Virgin Islands National Park, the beaches here remain remarkably pristine. No high-rise resorts, no chain restaurants, just white sand, turquoise water, and tropical foliage. After 40 years on this island, here are our seven favorites.
1. Trunk Bay
The postcard beach. Trunk Bay is the most photographed beach on St. John and for good reason. A perfect crescent of white sand backed by coconut palms, with a small island just offshore. The underwater snorkeling trail is marked with plaques identifying fish and coral species. It can get busy when cruise ship passengers arrive from St. Thomas, so go early morning or late afternoon for the best experience.
Local tip: Arrive before 9 AM or after 3 PM to avoid cruise ship crowds. The $5 entrance fee is worth it for the snorkeling trail alone.
2. Maho Bay
Maho Bay is where sea turtles come to graze on the seagrass beds just offshore. The water is calm and shallow, making it perfect for families with kids. The beach is narrow but long, with plenty of shade from the overhanging trees. Snorkel along the rocky edges on either side and you'll find coral formations, tropical fish, and if you're lucky, octopus.
Local tip: Look for turtles in the center of the bay where the seagrass grows. Bring your own snorkel gear. Rental availability is limited here.
3. Cinnamon Bay
The longest beach on St. John's north shore, Cinnamon Bay offers plenty of space to spread out. The ruins of a historic Danish sugar plantation sit just behind the beach. There's a small campground store where you can rent snorkel gear and kayaks. The offshore reef is excellent for snorkeling, especially around the small cays to the east.
Local tip: Walk east along the beach to find quieter spots. The further you walk from the parking area, the more private it gets.
4. Hawksnest Bay
Hawksnest is the closest north shore beach to Cruz Bay, making it a quick getaway when you want to be in the water within 15 minutes of leaving your villa. The snorkeling here is some of the best on the island, with elkhorn coral formations close to shore. There are covered picnic pavilions with grills, making it a favorite for local families on weekends.
Local tip: Snorkel along the right side of the bay (facing the water) where the coral is healthiest. Watch for sea urchins in the rocky areas.
5. Honeymoon Beach
Only accessible by hiking trail or boat, Honeymoon Beach lives up to its name. It's a small, intimate cove with calm water and soft sand. The hike from the Caneel Bay trailhead takes about 20 minutes and is well worth the effort. You can also rent a kayak from Cruz Bay and paddle around. The beach has basic facilities including restrooms and a small snack bar.
Local tip: Combine your visit with a hike to the Caneel Bay ruins for a half-day adventure. Pack water and snacks.
6. Saltpond Bay
On the south side of the island, Saltpond Bay offers a completely different vibe from the north shore beaches. The drive takes you through the island's interior, past centuries-old ruins and dramatic ocean views. The beach is rocky in places but the snorkeling is spectacular, with a chance to see larger fish and rays. Hike the Ram Head trail from the parking area for panoramic views.
Local tip: Bring sturdy water shoes. The rocky entry is worth it for the snorkeling. Go early before the sun gets intense on the south shore.
7. Francis Bay
Francis Bay is the quietest of the north shore beaches. It's a longer drive from Cruz Bay, which keeps the crowds away. The beach is wide and sandy with plenty of shade. Pelicans dive for fish just offshore, and the snorkeling along the left side is excellent. This is where you come when you want to hear nothing but waves and wind.
Local tip: Walk the Francis Bay trail at the eastern end for a 30-minute loop through mangroves and bird habitat. Great for morning walks.

- Reef-safe sunscreen: Required by law in the USVI. No oxybenzone or octinoxate.
- Plenty of water: No food or drink vendors on most beaches.
- Snorkel gear: Rent in Cruz Bay or bring your own.
- Water shoes: Essential for rocky entries at Saltpond and some north shore spots.
- Cash: Some beaches charge a small entrance fee ($5-10).
